Gilman was the son of John Bennett & his wife, Susanna (Lougee) Bennett.
He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1827 & began his medical practice in Middleton, New Hampshire, where he stayed until 1833. That year he returned to Parsonsfield, Maine, where he live for the remainder of his life. He is remembered as a man of rare ability, high mental & moral culture,a keen observer, a discreet counsellor, an excellent physician, a successful financier, a ready writer, an easy speaker, a true friend, an honored townsman & a worthy & beloved husband & father.
As early as 1838 he was elected to the Maine State Legislature, where he served three terms. After that he served as a Maine State Senator for two years, York County Treasurer for several years & a member of the Board of Trustees of Maine Insane Hospital for nine years.
Gilman married Hannah (Merrill) in about 1825 in Parsonsfield, ME.
