Joachim Jahnke was born on September 24, 1833 in Seddin, Brandenburg, Germany. He was the son of Hans Joachim Mathias Albrecht Jahnke and Catherina Marie Burow Jahnke. In earlier records, the family name was spelled as Jahncke.
Joachim married Marie Frühling in 1864. Their children Mina, Anna, William, and Marie were born in Germany. On October 19, 1872, the Jahnkes sailed from Hamburg to the port of New Orleans aboard the SS Vandalia, arriving on November 18th. From there, they made their way to Texas, settling near Phillipsburg. Their daughter, Marie, died sometime before 1880. Joachim and Marie had two more children after arriving in Texas, a son named Herman and another daughter also named Marie.
Joachim died on July 20, 1892. The German inscription on his tombstone reads:
Then, I believe His hand will embrace me.
I will look at God when I rise from the ashes and in this body I will see Jesus forever.
