Epp Dider Hardin
Birth: Oct. 1, 1822
Alabama, USA
Death: Jan. 11, 1898
Lincoln County
Tennessee, USA

Epp Dider Hardin married Minerva Reese daughter of Charles T. Reese Jr. and Elizabeth (last name unknown) on 1 April 1840 in Lincoln Co., TN. After Minerva's death he married Clorinda C. Webb on 16 Dec 1850.

Epp was a farmer in Lincoln County Tennessee. He was a civil war veteran having fought for the Confederate Army. It is believed that he served with the 44th Infantry of Company K. Epp survived the Battle of Shiloh and multiple other battles. Later, Epp lost a leg (family lore) in the Stones River Campaign at Hartsville (Trousdale Co.) which took place Dec 2, 1862. Military records indicate that Epp was discharged from the army on Dec 17, 1862.

Family lore indicates that Epp died after being kicked in the head by a mule. This story is supported by his obituary (see image attached).

Epp had several children with both wives. Thomas Beaty Hardin (1842-1902) his son with Minerva, was my great-great grandfather.

Little is known about Epp's parents. It appears that he may have been named for his father. His mother's name was Winnie. Some family members believe Winnie's maiden name may have been Tillery but that has not been proven. Winnie was born in 1882 and she died November 6, 1882. She is buried in the Taft Hovis Cemetery in Lincoln County, Tennessee.

Epp's obituary states that he was buried in Wright cemetery; however, the book, Cemetery Records of Lincoln and Moore Counties (Revised) by Helen C. and Timothy R. Marsh reports that Epp was buried beside his wife in the Davis Cemetery in Lincoln County. On August 8, 2011 a volunteer for Find-a-Grave attemtped to locate Epp's headstone in Wright Cemetery in order to take a photo. No headstone was found. In fact, there were no headstones for any members of the Hardin family. For this reason, Epp's Find-a-Grave memorial is listed in the Davis Cemetery in Lincoln County.
