Joseph Alcorn was born Dec. 15, 1836 in Hamilton Co., OH to parents John G. & Rachel M. Alcorn. His known siblings include: Martha (b. @1840), Catherine M. (b. @1843), John M. (b. @1845), and Almeda A. (b. @1848). Joseph enlisted in Co. C, 38TH IND INF on Sept. 18, 1861 out of Scott Co., IN. After more than 19 months' service where he saw action in two major battles (Perryville, KY and Stones River, TN) Alcorn was discharged on May 3, 1863 while the regiment was encamped near Murfreesboro, TN. He later served as a CPL in Co. C, 145TH IND INF.

Twenty-one years after the end of the war, Joseph applied for veteran's pension on Nov. 6, 1886 (app. #588,725; cert. #385,124). He was also an active member of the Illinois G.A.R. At the time of the 1910 U.S. Census, he was living in Homer, Champaign Co., IL with his brother John. Joseph Alcorn passed away June 17, 1918 in Homer, IL.
