Birth: Jun., 1842
Death: Sep. 21, 1921
Crawford County
Indiana, USA

Born in June 1842 to parents Thomas Adkins (b. 1815) and Margaret Riggle (b. @1821), James Adkins was 19 years old when he enlisted in Co. K, 38TH IND INF in Sept. 1861. His known siblings include: Mary E. (1839-1901), Amos (b. Feb. 24, 1844; also served in Co. K, 38TH IND INF), William H. (b. 1846), John Thomas (1847-1893), Charles (b. 1851), and Samuel (1859-1933). James's enlistment papers describe him as a 5'7" tall farmer, with gray eyes, light hair, and a fair complexion. He was discharged for "disability" on March 25, 1862, a little over six months into his army service.

After the war, James married Laura E. Gregory (b. @1849) and had the following known children together: Lettie L. (b. @1868), Mettie B. (b. @1870), Charles M. (b. @1872), and Elizabeth M. (b. @1877). At the time of the 1870 U.S. Census, the Adkins family lived in Marengo, Crawford Co., IN. James applied for a federal veteran's pension on Aug 5, 1876. After his wife Laura passed away, Adkins moved in with his daughter and son-in-law (Ruben & Mettie B. Roberson). He was enumerated as a member of their household in Sterling Twp., Crawford Co., IN at the time of the 1900, 1910, & 1920 U.S. Censuses. James passed away on Sept. 21, 1921 at age 79.
