John Heist, one of Oak Park's commercial leaders and a man of national reputation and leadership, died on Tuesday in Florida, where he had an estate. The end came at Lake Gem. He was a resident of Austin for many years and active in city affairs.
Funeral services will take place at 2 o'clock today (Saturday) afternoon at Pilgrim church, Scoville and Lake Knights Templar will have charge.
Mr. Heist, during the past five years, had his home in the south. Besides his wife, Daisy V. Heist, he leaves two daughters and two sons, residents of Oak Park, Mrs. Daisy Jones, Mrs. Dawn Gaskill, John A. and Robert K. Heist.
Mr. Heist, had been in the laundry business for the past thirty years. He established a chain of laundries throughout the country and was founder and president of the Brooks Laundry Company of Oak Park. He was the originator of a great many machines and appliances used in the laundry industry today. Mr. Heist worked and hoped to make the laundry industry one of the greatest industries of the country and lived to see his dreams realized.
Mr. Heist was one of the founders of the West Suburban hospital and was its first vice president and one of the directors. He took a great deal of interest in civic affairs and was instrumental in getting the city water to Oak Park.
While still active in business it was his hobby to care for crippled and poor children of Chicago. He gave up active interest in business five years ago and had maintained an estate at Lake Gem, where he was interested in fruit growing of the state.
Mr. Heist was a member of the Chicago Athletic club, Medinah Country club and numerous other organizations. He was a thirty-third degree Mason, past potentate of Medinah temple and past master of Golden Rule lodge of Chicago. He was born in Peru, ILL., August 24, 1861, and aside from his immediate family he leaves also two brothers, Charles Heist of Chicago, and Henry Heist of Lake Gem. The family has been sustained in its loss by the sympathy expressed by many friends and associates of Mr. Heist in all parts of the country. Tributes have been paid to his life and work by many influential men familiar with his ideals and his career in business and other circles.
