Mr. Bates died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, in Sulphur.
A native of Island, Ky., he was a resident of Sulphur. A lifelong member of the First Methodist Church in Island, Ky., he was a master electrician for 29 years with IBEW local 1701 in Owensboro, Ky. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Jarnell Bates of Sulphur; two stepsons, Ernest Barnes of Sulphur and David Barnes of Portland, Ore.; three stepdaughters, Gail Thibodeaux and Cynthia Bauer, both of Sulphur, and Trudy Latimer of Ecer, Texas; three sisters, Elwanda Wilson and Lorene Raush of Belvedere, Ill., and Dean Mitchell of Haubstad, Ind.; 18 step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
