From the American Press of May 9, 1948. Captain Martin Bahnsen, 74, one of the oldest schooner captains of the area and a resident of the Lake Charles vicinity for about 60 years, died Sunday at his home in the Moss Lake community. Born Sept. 16, 1873, in Wycke on the Island of Fohr, Germany, Capt. Bahnsen came to the U.S. at the age of 14 and settled in Westlake. He married the former Inez Trahan in 1896. Capt. Bahnsen, who began his seafaring career as cabin boy for the late Capt. Anton Bahnsen, his older brother, owned several boats and served as captain aboard other boats in commercial trade along the Gulf Coast and in the West Indies for 20 years before his retirement about 25 years ago.
