He married Christianna Horstman October 22, 1847, in Nimden, Westphalia, Germany. In 1860, he was a farmer living in Conewaago Township, Adams Co., and stood 5' 6" tall with black hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War Veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg, November 6 as a private with Co. H, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in Gettysburg. He also enlisted in York September 2, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg, September 4, as a private with Co. B, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry. he was wounded in the lower right leg at Petersburg, Virginia, April 2, 1865, during the final assault on the Confederate works but honorably discharged with his company May 30, 1865.

On July, 1891, he entered the state Soldiers' and Sailor's Home in Erie. At 1:30 PM that evening, he opened a window and leaped out, dying of his injuries at 4:30 AM.
