LAVON GASH, 45, RETIRED POLICE OFFICER, DIES
Darold Lavon Gash, 45, a retired Fresno policeman and a figure in San Joaquin Valley amateur athletics for nearly 25 years, died last night in his home at 3724 East Garland Avenue.
Gash had been ill since early 1959 with multiple sclerosis. He retired in 1960 from the Fresno Police Department after 14 years as a patrolman and detective.
Born in Atwood, Okla., Gash came to Fresno with his family as a child. He attended local school's, including Roosevelt High School, from which he was graduated.
CITY LEAGUE TEAMS
It was at Roosevelt that he began an athletic career which was to take up much of his leisure time. He played on a city championship basketball team and a team which won the valley baseball title at the school. He also played on several city league basketball and baseball teams.
His play on the St. Alphonsus' Catholic Youth Organization team which went to the national ABC tournament in 1938 won him a trial with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League.
In the late 1940's he played on semi professional baseball teams from Atwater, Merced and Laton. Monte Pearson and Lloyd Merriman, later major league players, were teammates. In 1950 he was a member of the world champion Roak softball team.
He played for the Fresno Police Department team from 1946 to 1954, continuing with the team as a coach until 1959.
Nearly 300 of Gash's police colleagues, friends and former baseball teammates paid tribute to his contributions to the valley athletic scene at a testimonial dinner in February.
An army veteran of World War II Gash was a member of the Easton Post 56 of the American Legion.
His survivors are his widow, Helen, and his mother, Mrs. Pearl Gash, both of Fresno; a brother, Maurice, who is stationed with the army at Ford Ord, Monterey County, and two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Greer of Fresno and Vera Gash of Abilene, Tex.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 9:30 AM in the Lisle Calaveras Chapel. Burial will be in the Belmont Memorial Park.
