Willard was the son of Isaac Luther Caughron and Levonia McMillan who were originally from Cocke County, Tenn and moved to the High Point North Carolina area where they raised their family.

His parents had 11 children together. Ten of their children lived to adulthood. These were 5 boys and 5 girls. Claude died at 2 days old. Willard was the 2nd born child. They were named in order of birth: William "Otey", Phillip Wesley "Willard", Ruby Reitzel, Nellie Matilda, Claude Haskel, Sarah "Allene", Mary "Juanita", Everett Luther, Jack Linville, Wanda Marie and Robert "Bobby" Thomas Walter Caughron.

He remained a batchelor his entire life. Willard moved to the Headland, Alabama area to be near his sister Ruby and her husband Elder Silas Dallas. Ruby was the next child born after Willard.

He was a member of Mt Enon Primitive Baptist Church in Edwin, Alabama and is buried next to his parent's and brother Claude in High Point, North Carolina.

Willard is remembered often for his wooden cane that he always carried due to a problem with his leg at birth.
