Obituary from the Shreveport Times newspaper, Dec. 23, 1987, Wednesday, p. 20:

SHREVEPORT James Edwin Allen died suddenly Dec. 22, 1987. Mr. Allen was born in Shreveport, La., Nov. 22, 1923, of Lel Goodwin and Littleberry Calhoun Allen and continued to live here all of his life. He is survived by his wife, Jean Basinger Allen, to whom he was married in 1967. Other survivors are his brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Allen Jr., his niece Francis Allen, and nephew L. C. Allen III.

Mr. Allen is descended from a prominent Shreveport family and continuing a family tradition, he contributed to his community and church in significant ways. Throughout his life he faithfully served his church, First Presbyterian, as church school teacher, deacon and elder.

He was associated with his family business and for many years was the president of Allen Construction Company. He belonged to and supported several professional and business associations. His interest in his community led him to serve as president of the Volunteers of America, president of Goodwill Industries and on the boards of the Association for the Blind and the Shreveport Country Club. He was king of the second Holiday in Dixie Cotillion Court, reigning in 1950.

Mr. Allen was president of his Byrd High School senior class and an honor graduate in civil engineering of Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, where he became a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in the European theater as a captain in the field artillery.

His life was marked by his love of people, a desire to serve, a deep devotion to his family and friends and the high regard in which he was held by his friends. He has left a heritage of fond memories.

Dr. John B. Rogers will conduct graveside services Thursday, Dec. 24, 1987, at Forest Park Cemetery at 10:30 a.m., followed by a memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m.

Pallbearers will be John Bird, James C. Gardner, John H. Hearne, James B. Haynes Jr., R. F. Kayser Jr., James Muslow, Willard Robinson, Aaron Selber Jr. and Fred Wilson.

The family requests that memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the charity of the donor's choice. Osborn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
