The daughter of Thomas and Amy (Retallack) Carveth, Joan was christened on October 24, 1728 in Ladock. She married fellow Ladock local John Courtney on August 24, 1754 in Ladock with John Reed and her brother Bennett Carveth as witnesses.

John and Joan began to raise a family in Ladock, having three children there: Anne, Thomas, and Catherine. They then moved to neighboring Probus, where they had three more children: Joan, Amy, and Jane. John and Joan had moved again to Helston by 1787, where they lived the rest of their lives. John preceded Joan in death in 1793, and Joan followed in 1794, at age 66. She was buried at the parish churchyard on October 11, 1794.
