A Yellowstone County sheriff's deputy was killed Friday morning in a one-vehicle accident on Interstate 90 while responding to a call for backup from another deputy. Deputy David Briese, 38, died following the accident that happened at about 10:25 a.m. when his eastbound patrol car went off the right shoulder of the highway just east of the King Avenue West on-ramp. The patrol car went down a grass bank, through a wood fence and struck a large metal post at a sign on the RDO Equipment Co. property. David was survived by his wife, two sons and a step-daughter. He'll be greatly missed.

David LeRoy Briese Jr., 38, of Billings, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, following an automobile accident while responding to a call for backup.

David was born in Billings, Dec. 11, 1967.
He worked as a law clerk and as an operator assistant in a casino-restaurant operation before working as a detention officer for Yellowstone County from 1995 - 2000. While at the Detention Facility, David was promoted to Sergeant in 1998 and was team leader of the tactical unit. David was a contract instructor at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy from 1997 through 2001, teaching security principles and cell extraction. In 1999, he became a Reserve Deputy for Yellowstone County. In 2000, David became a Big Horn County Deputy Sheriff. In 2001 until the date of his untimely death, he worked as a Yellowstone County Deputy Sheriff. As a Patrol Deputy, he enforced federal, state and local laws. David was a dedicated officer who lost his life trying to perform his duty the best way he could.

David is survived by his mother, Joanne Briese; his father and wife, David L. Briese Sr., and Dixie Briese; his sister, Paulette S. (Ernie) Ellefson of Minnesota; step sister, Kelly Mahan; uncles, T. Jerome Sabie, Embarrass, Minn., Daniel Sabie, Milwaukee, Wis., David Sabie, Minneapolis, John Briese Jr., of Vernal, Utah; his grandmother, Frieda M. Sabie; aunts, Linnea (Gimmer) Robinson, Holly (LeRoy) Axtell, Delaine Stroh and Lila (Bernard) Schleinger; and numerous cousins.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Expo Center, MetraPark.
