James Norman Adams, 77, of Battle Creek, died peacefully Sunday morning, Aug. 17, 2014 at the Oaks of NorthPointe Woods, Battle Creek with Paula, Jeff and Nick at his side.
Jim, the son of Paul and Chloe (Rodgers) Adams, was born on Feb. 8, 1937 in Coldwater and was a 1956 graduate of Coldwater High School.
Jim left a wonderful legacy for his family. His lifetime business career involved owning and operating many Pubs. Among them in the Battle Creek area were the Log Cabin Inn on W. Michigan Ave., Jim’s Lounge on Capital Ave. and the Waterfront Seafood Company on Columbia Ave. He was a familiar face at the Griffin Grill & Pub and the Cricket Club in the downtown, both of which were developed, owned and operated by his son, Jeff Adams. They spent many hours together, planning and designing both Pubs and he took great pride in being a mentor to Jeff. Jim was proud to be a successful businessman!
Jim and Paula enjoyed many travel experiences and spent some time in Sarasota, Florida each year. A source of joy to Jim was watching his son, Jeff, and 17-year-old grandson, Nick, grow into fine young men. Nick was especially the “Apple of Jim’s Eye,” having spent endless hours watching Nick play basketball, traveling with him to tournaments and having long conversations about the great sport of basketball.
Jim was united in marriage to Margaret Paula Weiler on Feb. 17, 1968 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Coldwater. Surviving is his wife of 45 years, Paula; his son, Jeff Adams of Marshall; grandson, Nick Adams of Marshall; three sisters, Geneieve Goheen and Beverly Estes, both of Coldwater, and Evelyn Espinoza of Battle Creek; a brother, Maynard Adams of Battle Creek; and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Joyce Blair of Coldwater and Betty Rosendaul of Quincy; and by two brothers, Lyle Adams of Coldwater and Chuck Adams of Colorado.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Aug. 22 at 11 a.m. at St. Philip Roman Catholic Church, 92 Capital Avenue, NE, Battle Creek, with Father Francis A. Marotti, Parochial Vicar, Celebrant. Family and friends will continue Jim’s life celebration with a time of fellowship and a luncheon immediately following the Mass in St. Philip’s Parish Center. The Adams family will receive friends on Thursday, Aug. 21 from 4-7 p.m. at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek, where the Parish Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Additional visitation will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23 from 12-1:45 p.m. at the Dutcher Funeral Home, 440 W. Chicago Street, Coldwater.
The Graveside Service will be celebrated Saturday at 2 p.m. in Oak Grove South Cemetery, Coldwater, with the Very Rev. Father Mark J. Vyverman V.F., Pastor of St. Charles, Celebrant. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jim’s honor may be directed to the American Heart Association, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674.
