Actor. Although his career spanned seven decades and encompassed radio, stage, motion pictures and television, he won cult status (and an Emmy nomination) for a single 1993 appearance on the NBC sitcom "Seinfeld". Playing grumpy, paranoid retiree Sid Fields, he famously uttered the lines, "I wasn't born yesterday. I might drop dead today, but I sure as hell wasn't born yesterday". He was also notable as Arthur The Bellman in another cult favorite, the big screen feature "Somewhere in Time" (1980), starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. William Lindsey Erwin was born in Honey Grove, Texas, and earned a Bachelors degree in Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin. Moving to California in 1941, he studied at the Pasadena Playhouse and made his film debut in the comedy "You're in the Army Now" (1941), with Jimmy Durante and Phil Silvers. Erwin himself would serve in the Army Air Force during World War II, after which he returned to Hollywood and resumed his acting career. His over 200 credits include the films "Under the Yum Yum Tree" (1963), "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" (1987) and "Home Alone" (1990), and appearances in such classic TV shows as "I Love Lucy", "Highway Patrol", "Sea Hunt", "Leave It To Beaver", "The Twilight Zone", "Gunsmoke", "Rawhide", "Mister Ed", "Perry Mason", "The Andy Griffith Show", "The Fugitive", and "Get Smart". He worked steadily until 2006, bowing out with an episode of NBC's "My Name Is Earl". He was also a self-taught artist who had cartoons published in Playboy and The New Yorker magazines. His awards included a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award and four Drama-Logue Awards. Erwin died of age-related causes at his home in Studio City, California. (bio by: katzizkidz)
