Betty (McNeil) Oakland Rhodes Reynolds grew up on the picturesque shores of Alsea Bay (north side) (Bay View District) just outside of Bayshore, Oregon.
Her adoptive parents were Oscar J. and Florence F. (Hay) Oakland who raised her on a farm which adjoined the bay from which the Alsea River pooled before it entered the Pacific Ocean. Although an idyllic life Betty often lamented that her two twin sisters, who lived in Waldport, had more fun because they resided across the bay in town while she lived out on the farm.
Betty was adopted as an infant (6-days old), her original name was McNeil. Even so, Betty adored her parents (Oscar and Florence) and never felt a moment's lack of love. Betty loved the farm she grew up on with its lush green which adjoined the bay with Waldport on the other side, the twinkling lights of which she could see in the evenings from her bedroom window.
Betty went to Waldport High with her 2 sisters and graduated with them.
During the 1950's Betty was a corpsman with the United States Naval Hospital service at Hawaii (Korean conflict).
Betty Doreen married Forrest (Dick) Rhodes (1963) and they lived in Hillsboro, Oregon.
Soon after, she and Dick had two sons, Forrest "Dusty" and Ross. These boys were the sunrise and sunset of Betty's life and she proved to be a nurturing caring mother until her death.
Eventually, Betty and Dick Rhodes divorced, but they were to marry again- divorcing twice.
Later on, in December 10, 1979, Betty remarried one last time, to Richard E. Reynolds (the former husband of her sister Janet Ann). The couple resided in Yakima, Washington. They divorced after about 10 years.
At this point Betty moved back to Waldport, where she lived out her life with her companion, Larry "Mac" McKenzie.
Betty passed away at 64 (1997) from a sudden illness.
Always the essence of the ocean, which ebbed and flowed throughout her life, Betty was intricately connected to the sea and the Oregon Coast.
