Tom Adkins - UNICOI
UNICOI – Tom Adkins, age 73, 125 Mose Ledford Road, Unicoi, died Friday, August 28, 2009, at the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Adkins was a native of Little Creek, North Carolina, and a resident of Unicoi County for most of his life. He was a son of the late William "Bill" and Pearlie Mae Watts Adkins.
Mr. Adkins was a carpenter for twenty-five years, retiring in 1990 from Cook Brothers Construction Company. He was formerly employed with the U.S. Forestry Service in the Pisgah National Forest located in Western North Carolina and was an avid farmer.
Mr. Adkins enjoyed music all of his life, especially singing and playing the guitar with family and friends. He also loved the outdoors and fishing.
Mr. Adkins was of the Freewill Baptist faith and attended New Hope Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Adkins; his brother, Billy Joe Adkins; and five sisters, Lynn Watkins, Winnie Potter, Ruby Hardin, Kathleen Edwards and Ginny Blevins.
Mr. Adkins is survived by his wife of thirty-one years, Gladys Adkins; four sons, Tommy Adkins Jr. and wife, Patty, David Adkins and wife, Kim, all of Unicoi, J.T. Adkins, Williamsport, Pennsylvania; and Joe Adkins and fiancé, Christine Hatcher, of the home; three daughters, Tina Hopson and husband, Jerry, Lisa Clevenger and husband, Terry, and Sherry Falk and fiancé, Dale Cable, all of Unicoi; one step-son, Henry Smith, Piney Flats; one step-daughter, Ann Hartley, Johnson City; eight grandchildren, Joshua Banks, T.C. Clevenger, Haley Adkins, Caleb Adkins, Dylan Cable, Megan Adkins, Garrett Adkins and Isaac Chrisman; one step-granddaughter, Heather Campbell; one step-great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at 7:00 P.M. from the Unicoi Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Todd McLaughlin officiating.
The graveside committal service will be held Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at 2:00 P.M. in Peoples Cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Family, minister, pallbearers and friends are requested to meet at the funeral home by 1:30 P.M. Wednesday to proceed to the cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. in the funeral home chapel and other times at the residence.
