BOCA RATON, Fla. - Marjorie C. Hughes was born Jan. 12, 1916, as Marjorie J. Clark of Barre, Vt. She was the oldest of five girls and her father, Douglas A. Clark, owned the Barre Daily Times Newspaper. Marjorie graduated from Spaulding High School in 1933 and was employed as a secretary by Granite Mutual Insurance Co. for eight years. In 1941, she married Roderick McDonald, a high school classmate, and had a son, Douglas (now deceased), and a daughter, Lois (Lois Reed).

Mrs. Hughes lived in Springfield, Mass., for 12 years and was active in the community and the Sixteen Acres Congregational Church. After residing in Sinking Spring, Pa., for two years, she moved to New Hartford, N.Y., and served 17 years as secretary of the First Presbyterian Church of Utica. After the death of Roderick McDonald in 1977, Marjorie married James R. Hughes, president of the Savings Bank of Utica, in 1984. They were married three years and Mr. Hughes passed on.

In 1990, Mrs. Hughes met Edward Scheiderer, a retired Coast Guard admiral, on a Western Parks trip and they became fast friends. They lived in New Hartford, N.Y., until the year 2000 and moved to St. Andrews Estates in Boca Raton, Fla. During this period, Mrs. Hughes volunteered at City Hall several days a week in the human resources department, becoming the Boca Raton Volunteer of the Year and was so honored by the city mayor.

Mrs. Hughes passed away on Sept. 20, 2010, and is survived by her devoted companion, Edward Scheiderer; her daughter, Lois Reed and husband Bruce of Tewksbury, Mass.; stepdaughter, Kerry Reed of Tewksbury, Mass.; two grandchildren, Kristin and Mathew McDonald, and daughter-in-law, Ann McDonald, of Medfield, Mass.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her four sisters, Janet Geals, Ruth Ann Lyons, Mary Maiden and Doris Otterman, predeceased her.

A service will be held for Mrs. Hughes on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, at 1 p.m. in the Hope Cemetery, Barre, Vt.
