Mellvin "Shorty" Aubert, longtime resident and businessman of Frederic, died Jan. 22, 2003, at Capeside Cove Good Samaritan Center in Siren. He was 89 years old.

Shorty was born Dec. 17,1913, in Rush City, Minn., to Frank and Olive (Normandin) Aubert. At the age of 16 he started hauling freight between Minneapolis and Rush City.

In 1940 he bought a truck line in Luck and continued hauling freight. During World War II, he served his country by hauling perishable goods.

On May 31, 1941, he married Grace Haines and they make their home in Luck until 1944 when he bought a dray line (Shorty's Ice and Dray) and moved to Frederic. During his lifetime he cut, stored and supplied ice from Coon Lake for early refrigeration and hauled freight and express from the Frederic Depot. During the polio epidemic he collected and sanitized garbage receptacles twice a week at no extra charge.

In 1955, he started purchasing heavy equipment for excavating and landscaping. After retiring in 1977 he maintained social ties with good friends and business acquaintances by selling merchandise for Newton Manufacturing.

Shorty and his wife, Grace, had two children, Rosella and Joe.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Clifford; and infant brother Richard.

He is survived by his wife, Grace, Frederic, son Joe, Frederic; daughter Rosella Aubert-Christensen of Bridgeport, Neb.; grandson Dr. Michael Christensen, Bridgeport, Neb., granddaughter Joey Elizabeth Christensen, Syracuse, Neb.; sister Carol Wanner, Osseo, Minn.; sisters-in-law Mae Aubert, Cushing, and Gertrude Althoff, Rush City, Minn.; special friends Jon and Kathy Hicks, Siren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Frederic on Jan. 25 with Father Tom Thompson officiating. Burial was in the St. Dominic's Catholic Cemetery in Frederic.

Thee Rowe Funeral Home, Frederic, assisted the family with arrangements.
