Edmund Brown Biography

Edmund Brown was born in September 1728 in Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, and was the son of Thomas Brown (b. ca 1704 d. October 1767, both in Greenwich) and Susannah Sherman (born February 1707/08 in Stratford).

Edmund's parents relocated to Greenwich around 1732, when Edmund was a young child. In February 1727/8 his parents sold property in Stratford that his mother, Susannah Sherman Brown, had inherited from her father Bezaleel Sherman, who had died in October 1717. In June 1734 a deed of sale for a small plot of land in Stratford was submitted by Thomas and Susannah Brown in Stratford; this deed stated that they were now residents of the Colony of New York. It is unknown whether they had residences in New York and Greenwich at the same time.

Edmund married Abigail Smith on January 5, 1750/51 in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut.

Abigail Smith was born on February 3, 1735/36 in Fairfield County, Connecticut, the daughter of Ebenezer Smith (b. 1690 d. 1863, both in Stamford, Connecticut) and Hannah Whitman Smith (b. ca 1702 d. 1782).

The earliest land-related reference to Edmund Brown in Greenwich appears in Greenwich Land Records on May 6, 1767 when he sold a salt meadow in Stamford to Abraham Davenport. Distribution of the estate of Thomas Brown (Edmund's father) by Thomas' son Thomas Brown of Greenwich (Greenwich Land Records, v. 10, p. 39): land left to Edmund Brown, the eldest son was with "Encumbrance of the widow and relict of Thomas Brown late dec'd her dower or third in the premises during her natural life." This was about four acres bounded on the south and west by North Street, and was called "Stony Bottom." Edmund sold this tract on the same day (June 7, 1770) to his youngest brother, Thomas Brown.

The children of Abigail and Edmund Brown were:

Sarah Brown, b. June 6, 1754, Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut.
Abigail Brown, b. November 29, 1755, Greenwich.
Mary Brown, b. April 27, 1758, Greenwich; d. 1840, Greenwich; m. Jonathan Reynolds, ca. 1781, Greenwich; b. 1756, Greenwich, Fairfield Co., Connecticut; d. 1809, Greenwich, Fairfield Co., Connecticut.
John Brown, b. March 14, 1760, Greenwich; d. April 22, 1815, New York, New York; m. Elizabeth "Betsey" Mead, May 1780, Greenwich; b. December 11, 1760, Greenwich; d. 1844, New York City, New York.
Hannah Brown, b. February 17, 1763, Greenwich.
Dosia Brown, b. ca. 1770, Greenwich.
Edmund Brown, b. ca. 1775, Greenwich.

Edmund Brown was commissioned ensign of the Middlemost Co. or train band in the October 1770 session of the town of Greenwich.

Times were difficult in Greenwich following the Revolution and many of the residents experienced financial problems, including Edmund. He and his family relocated to New York City, New York before May 1789. Several of their children and their families probably lived with Edmund and Abigail there.

Edmund Brown's name was listed as the "head of family" in the 1790 U.S. Census in New York City:

The dates of the deaths of Abigail and Edmund have not been documented. It is presumed that they both died after 1790, presumably in New York.
