Tom married my grandmother on May 12, 1943 in Long Beach, California. It was his second marriage and her third. Tom had previously been married to Effie Mooney, and they had 2 daughters, Bess and Inez.
Tom was very tall. He was a very gentle, quiet, and patient man. He was missing one or more fingers due to some kind of industrial accident, I think. He and my grandmother lived off the little plot of land that was owned by one of Tom's daughters and her husband. The house was very small and very old, but as a child I thought it was huge, and I have so many happy memories of visiting them. They grew apples, berries, and corn, and had their own chickens (which would peck my legs when I had to feed them). They had a large garden with every kind of vegetable, and a grape arbor with a swing just for me. They had no car, and we walked to town to buy groceries at Mr. Pohley's market and collect the mail at the post office.
I remember Tom saying very little. He and my grandmother took the bus once to Texas to visit his sister Alice. He told me once about finding a $10 gold piece. I vaguely remember him telling me other stories about his life in Texas, the details of which I've forgotten.
Tom passed away when I was 9 years old. I remember getting the phone call from my grandmother. He died suddenly while mowing the front lawn.
Rest in peace, Tom. You were a good man.
