Howard William (Tuffy) Bartlett
April 27, 1918 - November 8, 2009

Newport, NH: Howard William "Tuffy" Bartlett, 91, of Oak Street died on November 8, 2009, after a period of failing health.

Born April 27, 1918, in Newport, the eldest son of Clinton S. and Beatrice Marie (Ayers) Bartlett, Sr. Howard lived in Newport all of his life except for a short time in Goshen. After attending Towle High School, he worked at Condon's Market. He married Phyllis Anne Newton on November 12, 1939. On November 29, 1943, Howard was called for military service and went overseas in May, 1944. He was wounded in battle on October 23, 1944, but was soon returned to action. He was reported missing in action January 20, 1945, and remained at a Prisoner of War compound in Austria until the war ended. Upon discharge, Sergeant Bartlett was awarded the Purple Heart, Europe Africa Middle Eastern Ribbon with five battle stars, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the World War II Victory Medal. He returned back to his employment at Condon's Market, where he was employed 20 years as a meat cutter and then went to work as a driver for Williams Laundry followed by employment at Cricenti's Market for many years before joining his brother as co-owner of Bartlett Brothers Monuments for 30 years. After his retirement, he worked part-time at Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home with his brother.

Howard enjoyed spending time with his family, the cottage on Mt. View Lake, his beagles, and present Pomeranian, Lady. He was enjoyed and loved by his family for his easy going personality. He was always joking and would give anyone a helping hand. He lived to work; he joined the Newport Fire Department in 1943 and continued with them for many years. He was a member of the VFW, the Disabled American Veterans and a 50 year member of the American Legion.

Family members include his wife of 70 years, Phyllis Anne (Newton) Bartlett of Newport; a daughter, Lenis A. Bartlett, and her companion of 25 years, John H. Hooper, of Goshen; a granddaughter, Tamara A. Orrok, and her husband, James; two great-granddaughters, Alysha and Katelyn Orrok of Wilmot; and a sister-in-law, Patricia Bartlett of Newport. He was pre-deceased by his brother Clinton S. Bartlett, Jr., November 18, 2008.
There were no calling hours. A private Graveside Service for the family was held at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Tuesday the 10th, with Military Honors and officiated by Pastor Donna Leslie.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Upper Valley Humane Society, 300 Old Route 10, Enfield, NH 03748, or to the Newport Senior Center, Po Box 387, Newport, NH 03773.
