G. W., who was born April 1, 1836, in Southington, Conn., has been twice
married, he having been
married Dec. 29, 1859, to CAROLINE HEINLEY, a daughter of Peter Heinley. She
died Jan. 3, 1861,
leaving one child,
Carrie Cornelia, who was born Dec 29, 1860, and was married on the 8th of March,
1883, to Mr. T. P. RITCHIE, of Hudson, Ohio, and is the mother of three sons :
James Clayton, born March 9,1884 ;
Leland, born March 26, 1885 ; and
Carleton, born Sept. 12, 1886.

His second marriage which occurred Sept. 7, 1862, was with Laura Minerva COLE,
of Wilton Township, a daughter of James Cole, who is now deceased.
To them were born four children ;
Charles Strong, born Oct. 27, 1867, cast his first vote in 1888 for Benjamin
Harrison ;
Arthur Le Roy, born Sept. 14, 1872 ;
William Henry, born Dec. 11, 1875 ; and
Walter, born Sept. 30, 1885.
George killed himself while lying in bed at his farm in Wapsinonoc Township, 2 miles northwest of New Liberty according to his death record and a number of newspaper accounts published across Iowa (all readily available on Ancestry.com, FamilySearch.com, and various newspaper archive websites). His son Charles reportedly heard the shot while doing chores sometime after 6 a.m. and rushed into the home to find his father gasping his last breaths. His 3rd wife, Caroline Hannah Rogers (widow of Clark Hitchcock) was in Iowa City at the time for medical treatment. They married on 15 March 1893 in West Liberty. Several of his published obituaries correctly claimed that she was born and raised in Hawaii (previously known as the Sandwich Islands, not to be confused with the British held South Sandwich Islands of the Atlantic Ocean) and was a classmate of Queen Liliuokalani (Punahou School and Oahu College). Although described as a wealthy man with 2 farms, someone filed a motion to cut his widow's allowance from the statutory $500 to $300. The court not only refused the reduction, it demanded she be compensated for the personal property that was rightfully hers but had already been sold.
