AUGUSTUS R. DAVIS DIED THIS AFTERNOON
He is the First Active member of the Fire Dept. to Die in Sixteen Years.
The many friends of Augustus R. Davis will regret to learn of his death which occurred at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Davis in South Madison Street about 1:00 o'clock this afternoon. Mr. Davis had been ill for over a year and confined to the house since last fall. The cause of death was tuberculosis of the kidneys. Mr. Davis was born in Marengo on February 24, 1883 and had just passed his 31st birthday. He had been a resident of Marshall for over 25 years and attended the public schools. He was one of the popular grocery clerks having worked for the late John Wiseman, S.E. Cronin Co., and C. H. Hillibrant. He had been with Mr. Hillibrant for nearly five years when taken ill. He worked for a time at the steel plant and last summer assisted the Globe Construction Co., as time keeper on the paving and sewer work. Mr. Davis was a member of the Wolverine Hose Co., and was a faithful member of the department. He is the first active member of the department to die since the death of Patrick Flynn in April 1898. As a token of esteem in which he was held by the members of the department and the city officials Mayor Gauss ordered the flag at half mast on the fire station. He was a member of the Maccabees, Uniform Rank and belonged to the Knights of Pythias.
Mr. Davis is survived by his parents and one sister, Mrs. Oliver Bailey. The funeral will occur Thursday, the time and place to be announced later.
