Birth: 1830
Death: Aug. 16, 1908
Napier, New Zealand

Robert Ambrose was born in the Fermoy area of Cook County, Ireland, in the 1830's or 1840's, was baptized in the Kilworth Parish. A listing in the 1846 Slaters Directory for Cork an entry reads "Michael Ambrose and Judith Ahern went to USA, Boston". From records obtained in Cork it is believed that Michael Ambrose and Judith Ahern were Robert's parents so he may have travelled with them as a young lad to Boston.

By 1878 he was living in Napier, New Zealand where his youngest child Richard was born. He migrated to the state of Massachusetts in the United States where his occupation was listed as that of a tailor at Boston, Massachusetts and he enlisted with the 4th Light Artillery Regiment at Massachusetts as a private on February 2, 1864 at the age of twenty-four. He was finally discharged from Unit 1004 on October 14, 1865 at New Orleans, Louisiana.

Robert Ambrose did not stay in America after he was discharged from the Union Army with distinguished service on 14 October 1865 in New Orleans. After his discharge Robert made his way to London where in May 1869 he married Margaret Lane at the Italian Church of Saint Peter, Clerkenwell Road, London.
They had two children born in Cork County, England, Mary and Michael. Michael was born in Blarney Street, Cork City, Ireland on 15 June 1871 and Mary states on her marriage certificate that she was born in 1875 in Fermoy, Cork. By 1878 he and his wife had migrated to Napier, New Zealand; where their youngest child Richard was born. They had three children; two sons and a daughter.

The family arrived on the "Camperdown" which sailed from London on 14 April 1876 and arrived in Nelson on 4th July 1876; there were 410 immigrants on board. The shipping records show Robert 37 from Cork (farm labourer), Mary 28 his wife and children Mary 7 and Michael 5. Sadly Richard died in 1906 at the young age of 28 and his brother Michael in 1918 aged 43. Neither had children. The Ambrose family lived in White Road, Shakespeare Road and Hastings Street, Napier. It would appear that Robert ran his tailoring business from Hastings Street.

Robert died on August 16, 1908 at the Wairoa Hospital, certificate number 1758, and was buried in the Wairoa Cemetery, a city just north of Napier on North Island in New Zealand. His obituary in the East Coast Mail newspaper on August 17th, however, misstated his name as "Richard" Ambrose.
