Birth: 1832, England
Death: unknown

William Curtis's birth, on his military enlistment records, states he was born in 1832 in England, but his age recorded at death indicates he was born in 1828.

On October 24, 1861 William Curtis at 29 years of age was living in Blair County, Pennsylvania when he enlisted as a Sergeant into the 84th Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry; and was mustered into Company "A". He remained in the 84th until January 13, 1865 when he was transferred into the 57th Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry and mustered into Company "I". He was finally mustered out of service on June 29, 1865 at Alexandra, Virginia.

William Curtis was described as being 5 feet 8 inches tall, with dark hair, grey eyes, a fair complexion and an occupation as that of a laborer.

One service record shows that he was "promoted" to Corporal on April 1, 1862 and then to Sergeant on September 1, 1862; which has to be an error, as he "enlisted" as a Sergeant; on October 24, 1861.

After the war Curtis migrated from the United States to New Zealand, where set up residence on South Island in the Scottish town of Dunedin; where he lived out his life. On December 21, 1907 Curtis applied for a military pension using his 57th Regiment service as a basis; only mentioning his service in the 84th Regiment as "additional services".

William Curtis died at 92 years of age on February 1, 1920 on South Island at 588 Castle Street in Dunedin, New Zealand.

The William Curtis funeral was conducted by Mr. Archer, funeral director and he was buried in the Anderson's Bay Cemetery in Block 52, Plot 97 on February 3, 1920. Also buried in the same Block and Plot is Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Barnes, 73 years of age, who died on September 6, 1931 while living at 407 Castle Street in Dunedin. She was buried on September 8, 1931.
