Obituary:
Lee Reed Beckstead
1928 ~ 2012
Lee Reed Beckstead, 84, community and religious leader, died peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at his South Jordan home.
Lee loved living in South Jordan and worked hard to preserve the city's history and heritage. He contributed to the founding of Heritage Park and was honored as South Jordan Citizen of the Year.
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Lee served three different missions: Southern Pacific Mission in 1948; as director of the Joseph Smith Birthplace Memorial in Sharon, VT in 1997; and as a missionary on Temple Square in 1999.
He served faithfully as bishop of the South Jordan 2nd and 8th Wards. His life was built on a foundation of service and love for others, exemplified in the motto he lived by:
A bell is no bell 'til you ring it. A song is no song 'til you sing it, Love wasn't put in the heart just to stay, Love isn't love 'til you give it away.
Lee was born Sept. 4, 1928, in Riverton, Utah, to Edward Byrum Beckstead and Mary Ellen Seal. He married Rhea Newbold in the Salt Lake Temple on June 30, 1948. Together they had two daughters, Karen and Shauna. Fred Butterfield joined their family at age 13.
After Rhea's passing, Lee married Ruth Stewart on Jan. 16, 1987, in the Jordan River Temple, adding her children - Jeff and Rebecca - to their family.
Lee found great joy in his family; they were the center of his life.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; children including Craig and Karen Thomson; Alan and Shauna Nielson; Fred and Charlene Butterfield; Jeff and June Sorensen; and David and Rebecca Perry. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday, Dec. 15, at 11 a.m. at the River Second LDS Ward Building, 1540 West 10400 South, South Jordan, Utah. Friends may call on Friday, Dec. 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 1007 West South Jordan Parkway, South Jordan, or on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in the South Jordan City Cemetery.
