An Aged Lady Burned to Death in Florence
On Monday morning last, about 2 o'clock, a horrible accident occurred at the home of Mr. John Garibaldi, on College Street, which resulted in the death of Mrs. A.C. Barnard, Mrs. Garibaldi's mother. At the early hour named Mrs. Barnard had arisen from her bed and built a fire in the grate. From this her clothing in some unknown way caught fire, and before assistance could reach her, her clothing was in a full blaze. Mr. Garibaldi, who quickly responded to her cries for help, threw around her first a quilt and then a feather bed, the latter only suppressing the flames. On examination, Drs. Boyd and Lindsey it was found that the entire body had been badly burned, causing death at 5:30 o'clock the same morning. The deceased was 75 years of age, and had been a resident of Florence about twenty years. She was a member of the Baptist church, the widow of a Baptist minister. The funeral took place Tuesday morning, conducted by Dr. McDougal, after which the interment took place in the city cemetery. The sister of Mrs. Barnard, Mrs. Narcie Riding and her neice, Miss Minnie Riding, of Corinth, Miss., arrived in the city Monday afternoon to attend the funeral. Mr. Garibaldi and the family have the sincere sympathy of our people in the distressing bereavement that has fallen upon them.
