Mrs. Barbara Lower died at the home of her son, L. K. Lower, Jan. 26, 1900, at the age of 84 years. Barbara Hoover was born in, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, 1816. At the age of five years, she moved with her parents to Indiana and at the age of 22, she was married to Christian Lower. In 1855, they moved to Winneshiek County, where they have resided since. Five children were born to this couple, of which four boys are living; the other a girl, dying in infancy. Three of the sons were present at the funeral, Joseph, of Dakota, James, of Waukon; and L. K. with whom she lived. John is the other son and lives at Osage, but was not present at the funeral. Mrs. Lower has been sick and confined to her bed for the past two years, having had a stroke of paralysis just before her husband died two years ago. She had not taken a step after breaking her hip April 4th, 1899, and at times suffered a great deal. The funeral was hold at her home Sunday afternoon. Reverend Will officiating, the interment being made at the Pagin Cemetery. The day being an unusually cold one, not so large a crowd was in attendance as would have been if the weather had been otherwise. Nevertheless a large crowd were present to pay their last respects to an old friend and neighbor.
