James married Elizabeth Little in Scotland in about 1835. They had 5 known children, all born in Scotland:

-Glibert Grieve (1837-1900)
-Elizabeth Grieve (1839-1928)
-Mary Jane Grieve (1844-1941)
-William Grieve (1847-1898)
-Janette Grieve (1850-1899)

James and Elizabeth came to America with their 5 children in 1855. At the time Scotland was in economic turmoil which may have been a contributing factor in the family's decision to come to the new world.

The family settled in Caledonia, Columbia Co., WI, and he and Mary remained there until James died in 1871. Mary was living with her son William and daughter Mary in 1880 in Verona, WI.
