Maude was a 1906 graduate of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, D. A. R., American Association of University Women, and both she and her husband were members of the Congregational Church in Lansing, Michigan. They were both Republicans.
Maude was a second cousin, to Admiral George Dewey, who led the US Navy in a decisive battle during the Spanish-American War. Widely hailed as the "Hero of Manila" for his action in the Spanish-America War, he is best known for defeating the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay, sinking all 8 Spanish ships, while sustaining very little damage to his own ships, no dead and only 8 wounded.
