Chester as he preferred to be called, changed his last name from Gray to Grey after returning from time in Australia (must have been before he went to college since all of his college records have the spelling Grey). He went by the name Chester for most of his life.
The youngest of all of his brothers and sisters, he thought he should go to college because he was bright. He majored in engineering and in 1902 earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He wrote a Senior Thesis entitled "A complete Efficiency Test of the High Duty Pumping Station at Madison, Wisconsin."
Chester married Maude Ella Wheeler, 1 Jul 1905, in Des Moines, IA. They had 6 children (listed below).
Over the next 20 years they lived in Omaha, NE, Savannah, GA, Fort Wayne, IN, Lansing, MI, and finally settled in Atlantic City, NJ.
In 1930 he became the President of the Atlantic City Gas Company. The Atlantic City Gas Company was merged with People's Gas Company in 1947 into what is today (2008) known as South Jersey Gas.
Excerpt from "FROM SMALL BEGINNINGS" BY WILLIAM A.GEMMEL. A history of South Jersey Industries, Inc. and South Jersey Gas Company - 1910 - 1985:
"In February 1933 he relinquished his duties to Robert Wiederwax, then acting general manager. Citing continued poor health, he resigned as president of the company in December 1933. Chester Grey's high blood pressure, for which there was no effective medication, led to a stroke and he died on July l, 1935. He was 55 years old. Elizabeth Stewart remembers him as a marvelous father who was devoted to his family."
