Ephraim Hinsdale was the youngest son of Robert and Ann (Woodward) Hinsdale. He was born in Dedham and traveled to the settlement of Pocumtuck (Deerfield) with his family as a young, unmarried man. There his father and three brothers, John, Barnabas, and Samuel, were killed at the siege known as Bloody Brook in September of 1675. One surviving brother, Experience, died the following year at the Falls Fight, at what is now Turner's Falls, on May 19,1676. His mother had already died prior to the war. On September 28,1676, he married Mehitabel Plimpton, and they moved down the river from Deerfield to Hatfield, where three children were born. A daughter, named Experience, and a son, named John, were most likely named in honor of two of Ephraim's lost brothers. Another daughter, Mehitabel, was named for her mother. Ephraim died in 1681 and his widow moved back to the safety of Medfield/Dedham, where the Hinsdale and Plimpton families had first settled. The legacy of the lost Hinsdale family was carried on in Deerfield through Samuel Hinsdale's children, whose relation to the early history is commemorated through the Ebenezer Hinsdale (and Anna) Williams House, a museum property at Old Historic Deerfield. Ephraim's and Mehitabel's daughter, Experience, married Nathaniel Clark of Medfield and they remained in Medfield the rest of their lives.
