DEATH NOTICE: Hiawatha Daily World - Saturday, Sept 30, 1916
Mrs. Maria L. Aten died at her home in Chicago Saturday morning, Sept. 30. She had been ill only a short time. Mrs. Aten, with her daughter, Miss Stella, who is a teacher in the Chicago University, spent the summer in California and just returned to Chicago for the opening of school. Mrs. Aten is survived by her two daughters, Stella W., and Edna B., Mr. Aten having died March 7, 1913. The body will be brought to Hiawatha Sunday noon on the Grand Island. The funeral arrangements have not been made.

The body of Mrs. Maria L. Aten, who died in Chicago Saturday morning was brought to Hiawatha Sunday noon and taken to the Meek undertaking parlors. Mrs. Aten was 68 years old. The Aten family had been residents of Hiawatha since 1870, until after the death of Mr. Aten, when they moved to Chicago. Mrs. Aten was a member of the Rebekah lodge, of Sorosis and of the First Baptist Church. She was always interested in the better things of life and was a home loving woman.
The funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Monday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. G. B. Merritt. A quartet composed of Miss Nelle Lewis, Miss Mamie Rosenberger, Douglas Hanney and Chester Jones sang "Abide With Me," "Nearer, My God, to Thee," and "Rock of Ages." The body bearers were old friends and members of the I.O.O.F. lodge. They were Wm. Ahern, T. Stevens, Blair Syster, A.W. Humphrey, Smith Johnson, T.G. Carter. The members of the Rebekah lodge attended in a body. Burial was made in Mount Hope Cemetery. The body was accompanied here by her two daughters, Miss Stella Aten and Mrs. Geo. Bugg, of Sciota, Ill.: Mr. Bugg and little son Lawrence; Mrs. Aten's sister, Mrs. Julia McLaughlin and son Elmer, of Quincy, Ill.; Mrs. Aten's sister-in-law, Mrs. A.B. Bryan and husband, of Sciota, Ill.; Mrs. Aten's sister, Mrs. Edgar Jones and her husband, of Macon, Mo. The relatives all returned to their homes except Mrs. Jones and Miss Stella, who remained to look after business matters.
