2005 Mar 15 - Traverse City - Shirley Ann Hankins was born Sunday 26 Jan 1941 in Elk Rapids to Ernest Cleveland & Marion Jane (Greene) Hankins. She attended two years of high school. She married Gregory James Yager Friday 01 Mar 1957 in Cadillac. On Saturday 16 Jun 1962 the home of Gregory & Shirley Yager at 1163 E 40 1/2 Rd in Cadillac was struck by lightning and burned to the ground; the family lost all of their possessions in the fire. Gregory & Shirley Yager and their 3 daughters, Cheryl Ann, Carla Marie and Audrey Sue, were visiting friends in Manton at the time of the fire. When the family returned home early Sunday morning Gregory found the home completely demolished. She worked for Frankfort Garment Company in Cadillac and enjoyed crocheting, word searches, casinos and puzzles. She was a member of the Boon Baptist Church. She lost leg to Peripheral Artery disease. After the death of Gregory she married Joseph William 'Bill' Behrns Friday 20 Dec 1996 at their home in Boon.
Shirley Ann (Hankins, Yager) Behrns of Boon died at 12:50 pm Tuesday 15 Mar 2005 at the age of 64 y 1 m 17 d at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City from Ischemic Bowel Disease. At the time of her death she had been a patient at the hospital. She had been in and out of the hospital for the last four months before her death. Survivors included her husband, Bill; 4 daughters, Cheryl & Richard Mapes, Kathleen & Rocky Todd, Carla Yager, all of Cadillac and Audrey Couch of Memphis, Tennessee; 3 step-children, Doug Behrns of Boon, Barbara & Ed Curtis of Lake City and Joseph William Behrns Jr of Tustin; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 7 step-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren; mother, Marion Jane (Greene) Hankins of Traverse City; 9 sisters, Donna Porter of Manton, Mary Eichholtz and JoAnn & Frank Doty, all of Traverse City, Linda & Dennis Squires of Lansing, Nancy & Michael Flinta of Pearl, Mississippi, Sally & Don Finley of Gaylord, Selma & Carl Reiter of Boon, Karen & Charles Holborn of Vanderbilt and Judy Hankins of Washington; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gregory; 2 sons, Gregory Allen and Douglas James Yager; 2 daughters, Cynthia Kay and Jayne Lee Yager; her father, Ernest Cleveland Hankins; and 2 brothers, Ernest Junior Hankins and Robert Walter Hankins Sr.
Visitation was 10 am until time of services Saturday 19 Mar 2005 at Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac. Funeral services were 11 am Saturday 19 Mar 2005 at Peterson Funeral Home with Rev Lloyd Jewett officiating.
Burial was in Plot 47 in Selma Township Cemetery. She is buried in same plot as her first husband, Gregory; baby's Gregory Allen, Cynthia Kay, Jayne Lee, and Douglas James Yager.
Memorial contributions were to be made to the family. Envelopes were available at the funeral home.
Committal services were 10 am Thursday 14 Apr 2005 at the Selma Township Cemetery with Rev Lloyd W Jewett officiating.
