|Birth: ||May 29, 1789|
|Death: ||Jun., 1860|
Hugh Barclay was born on 29 May 1789 in Pennsylvania to unknown parents. It is thought that Hugh migrated on to Kentucky and then settled in Missouri where he was found listed on the muster roll for Capt. Daniel M. Boone's Company of Mounted Rangers. He was a corporal in the War of 1812.
Hugh married Margaret Groff on 26 March 1812 in either Kentucky or Missouri. The family lived in Franklin, Gasconade, and Newton Counties in Missouri. The couple had thirteen children named Sarah Pursley, Andrew Groff, Nancy Ann Charlotte, Henry Thomas, Statira, Stephen C., Margaret, Harriet, John S.T., Balser T., Joseph Hugh, Hattie Elizabeth, and Martha Patsy Barclay. Hugh and most of his family migrated on to Hopkins County, Texas before 1850. He settled and owned land in the community called Pleasant Hill which later became known as Nelta. 1850 Hopkins County census listed him as a cabinet maker.
An old family writing told that Hugh became an invalid with paralysis. His wife, Margaret, was told to have come in one morning from milking and found him dead. The exact date of his death is unknown, but the time would tie to 1850-1853. Hugh was buried in the McFall Cemetery, but no stone has been located.
