Benjamin Wiley Brooks was born in May of 1856 in Humphreys County, Tennessee, the second child of Charles Milton and Margaret Jamison Brooks. His father died either during or right after the end of the Civil War after serving as a Confederate. His mother remarried to an Irishman named Hugh McTigue. His stepfather died before 1875.
Margaret Jamison Brooks McTigue and her family moved to Independence County, Arkansas. There Ben met and married Emily Jane Lynch on 6 August 1879. The couple had eight children named Nathan Franklin, William D., Etta E., Estella, Nettie Harris, James Octavius, Clarence Earl (Stubby), and Benjamin Ova Brooks. The children were all born while the family lived in Arkansas except for the youngest who was born after the family migrated to Texas.
Ben Brooks was a farmer and a Baptist preacher.
He died on 12 June 1923 in Mt. Vernon, Texas. His death certificate lists the cause of death as uremia. Benjamin Wiley Brooks was buried in the Fairview Cemetery. No tombstone has been located.
