George E. Buckton, 86, of East Syracuse, went home to be with the Lord early Friday morning while surrounded by his loving family.
George was born October 5, 1926 in Syracuse, the son of George A. and Blanche Buckton. George was a graduate of Eastwood High and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Marine Corps serving during WW II in the Third Division in the European Theater in the Battle of Iwo Jima and then re-enlisted to serve his country in the Korean War. Upon returning from war he worked for Con Rail and then George began a wonderful career at Niagra Mohawk where he spent 37 years as a trouble truck lineman. George retired in 1988 and began a part time job as a crossing guard for St. Matthews School and Kinne St. Elementary. His kindness and dedication was shared with students for 22 years. George was a parishioner of St. Matthew's Church for many years where he also served as an usher. George lived his life as a man of principle, hard work, kindness and love. George will be missed dearly by all whose lives he has touched.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Donna Jean Buckton and his brother, Donald J. Buckton.
Surviving are his loving wife of 45 years, Elizabeth "Betty"; his son, George C. Buckton; his daughters, Patricia Buckton, Lori Garris, Lizzie Buckton; his grandchildren, R.W. and Jason (Andrea) Guinn and Rosie and Daniel Garris; nieces and nephews; special friends, Marty and Rox Mullane and family; and his much loved pets, Moofasa and Teddy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2013 in St. Matthew's Church, Kinne St. East Syracuse, Rev. Dennis Hayes celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Minoa. Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Rt. 11, Mattydale.
The family would like to extend their appreciation for the wonderful and compassionate nursing staff and doctors at Crouse Hospital, 6 north, to include Dr. McMinn, Linda Halco NP, and Dr. Crogilo.
In lieu of flowers, the family strongly encourages contributions to the Onondaga County Air-1 Foundation, PO Box 141 N. Syracuse, NY 13212.
