Final Rites For Reed Abernethy
The death at 4:30 Friday afternoon of Reed Abernethy, retired salesman, came as a shock to his many friends. Mr. Abernethy, 79, became ill while in an Okolona business house. He was taken to his room and a physician summoned but he died before the doctor arrived.
He was the son of the late Robert "Bob" Abernethy and the late Mrs. Kathy Fields Abernethy. He was a bachelor.
He was a member of the Methodist Church and for a number of years sang with the choir, was an honorary steward and for more than a quarter of a century was secretary-treasure of the Men's Bible Class.
Services for Mr. Abernethy were held in the chapel of the Barry Funeral Home at 2:30 Saturday afternoon with the Rev. J. W. Chatham, pastor of the Okolona Methodist Church, officiating. The church choir sang Rock of Ages and the Old Rugged Cross. Mrs. Fred McGehee was the accompanist.
Burial was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery with Barry in charge.
Pallbearers were six members of his Sunday School Class: Harry Laster, A. McDonnell, W. H. Dawson, Tom Woodfin, Earl Grauer and Billy Stone, Jr. Other members of the class were honorary pallbearers.
