Their story begins with the birth of William on March 24, 1840, in Northern Ireland. His wife, Mary Ann Gregg, was also a native of Ireland, born three days before William. Four of their ten children were born in Scotland, including baby Sarah who lived less than a year. Matilda was born in Scotland on September 23, 1867.

The family of five left Scotland and came to America, arriving in New York in 1870. They made their way to Philadelphia, where they stayed for eight years before arriving in Hodgeman County in 1880. Unfortunately, two years later, William passed away at age forty-two. By this time, Matilda was married; the remaining siblings were twelve, four, and two years old. Nevertheless, Mary Ann stayed on the farm and made final proof on the homestead in 1893.

Matilda was born in Scotland and came to America at age five. On April 18, 1885, she married Price Vernon Monroe at the Great Western Hotel in Dodge City. Two daughters were born to the couple, Josephine and Mary Pearl. Sadly, Matilda died on January 28, 1889, at age twenty-one.

Josephine and Mary Pearl were ages four and two when Matilda passed away. Price went to Colorado to find work, and the girls were cared for by their maternal grandmother, Mary Ann Blakeley.
Mary Ann remained on the homestead and made final proof in 1893. On December 7, 1924, Mary Ann died and joined her husband and daughter in Fairmont Cemetery.

The rest of the story: Price did remarry and died in Pueblo, Colorado, in 1920. Both Josephine and Mary Pearl married. Josephine died in 1976, and Mary in 1970.
