ACUFF,
Arthur Bret
(Age 68)

Art Acuff, Jr. passed away at home in the arms of his wife Julie and in the presence of family November 20, 2011. He died after a heroic battle with cancer, which amazed and inspired many. He was born February 13, 1943 in Montesano, WA to Arthur and Mildred (Stanton) Acuff. His school years were spent in Olympia and Lacey, WA where he graduated from St. Martins High School in 1961. He moved to Spokane Valley in 1968, working for various companies in the valley as a salesman. Recently in his retirement he drove school bus for East Valley and Central Valley School Districts. Art's greatest passions in life were his family and various sporting activities. His three favorites were bass fishing, hunting and tennis. He loved them for the competition and the challenge but also because he could share them with family and friends. Once diagnosed with cancer, these activities, in addition to his family and faith, sustained him through countless chemo treatments, radiation and surgeries. In the last six months, he would sit through a four hour chemo treatment and then drive himself to the Spokane Club to practice for his USTA 3.5 senior men's tennis team practice for the national championships. His doctors learned to check if he had a bass tournament, tennis tournament or if hunting season was opening before they scheduled his treatments. Art was a member of Inland Empire Bass Club, the Spokane Club, and he had a group of friends that he met with every Thursday night for over 30 years. He considered everyone he associated with in these groups as part of his family and cherished and valued the time he spent with them. Art was preceded in death by his parents, Art, Sr. and Mildred Acuff; his sister, Kathleen; and his brother, Dennis. He is survived by his wife, Julie; daughter, Teri (John) Chlanda; sons, Mike Acuff, Bret Acuff, Brandon (Lisa) Gates, and Jason (Nicki) Skeie; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He also leaves behind sisters, Diane (Phil) Weston, Maureen (Don) Batten, and Angie (Ken) Moses; brothers, Kevin (Kim) Acuff, and Brian (Becky) Acuff; and many nieces and nephews. His family would like to thank the many people who have offered their love and support through his illness, although there are too many to mention, we hope you know who you are and that we love you. A celebration of Art's life will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2011, at 2:00 PM, at Valley Real Life Church, S. 1831 Barker Road, Greenacres, WA. A coffee and dessert gathering will follow the service.
