FORMER LOCAL DRUGGIST DIES IN DOWAGIAC
DOWAGIAC, Feb. 18--Funeral services were held here Thursday for Pvt. Arthur E. Abendroth, 45, Dowagiac service man and a former Dowagiac and Benton Harbor drug store worker, who dropped dead on a street in Dowagiac while enroute downtown on foot.
He was at home on furlough from Camp Sibert, Ala., to visit his father, August Abendroth, on Mill street, and Mrs. Walter Taberski and family.
He passed the first night with his father then went over to the home of his sister. While there he complained of a pain in his chest.
Starting downtown about 10 o'clock in the morning, he had reached the Franklin coal office on East Division street, when he was seen to turn about and start to retrace his steps, apparently trying to return home. He fell. Railroad men at work nearby picked him up and he was taken to Lee Memorial hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival there.
He was born in Dowagiac on Sept. 15, 1898, the son of August and Henrietta Wolf Abendroth and most of his life was spent in this city. He was a graduate of the local high school and of the Ferris Institute at Big Rapids, where he took a pharmacy course.
For several years he was employed in Burlingame and Stahl drug store in this city. He was inducted into the army 10 months ago from Berrien while employed in a Benton Harbor drug store. He was with the medical corps.
Besides his father and his sister, Mrs. Taberski, he leaves two nieces and a nephew, Billie Jean Abendroth of Battle Creek, Paul and Dorothy Taberski of this city. His mother died five years ago, and his brother, William, in 1921.
