Birth: 1736
Virginia, USA
Death: 1785
North Carolina, USA

John Ashburn, III & his wife Elizabeth lived in Caroline County, Va 12 Jul 1753

Marriage records are confusing. Multiple records list the date as January 9, 1765. But some state the bride's name is Mary Gottier, some say Elizabeth Gottier. They were married at Old St. Paul's Catholic Church in Philadelphia.

Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly (published Feb. 1994), Land Patent Book Vol. 32, page 79 , states:
James March, 608a, the upper Parish of Nandsemond Co, bounded by David Mead's and James March's c to John Ashburn, Peter Best and Elisha Ashburn, Abraham HInes, Witche's Br, James HInes, Nathan King's P, Elisha Ballard, the half way Sw, Francis Speight's P, his own c, Mr. Mead's line; 200a formerly g unto John Taylor by P 21 Sep 1674, and 150a also formerly g unto Francis Speight by P 2 Jun 1673, and 258a the Residue being Surplus L found within the bounds of the sd Ps. 15 May 1755, p. 554. 30 shill.

John was also a soldier in the American Revolution, enlisted in NC. The names of John Ashburn and Peter Ashburn are found a list of prisoners held on the prison ship "The Old Jersey". The British used the ships at Wallabout Bay, later the site of the Brooklyn Navy Yard..

Roster of soldiers from North Carolina in the American Revolution, 1932, written by the North Carolina Daughters of the American Republic: Army Accounts for Warrenton County Settlements: John Ashburn, page 506

It is not known where or when John died. He is listed in a NC census record of 1784-1787, and is shown living near his son Anderson Ashburn. I chose to use 1785 as his death year but it is only a guess.

Research by Christine Ashburn, 6th great granddaughter.
