Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007, at the Central Christian Church in Arkansas City. The Rev. Steve Chambers will officiate. Interment will follow in the Hope Cemetery. Melvin was born Jan. 29, 1930, in Arkansas City, to Glenn Linfred Current and Edith Lucile (Coulter) Current. He attended Arkansas City High School graduating in 1948. Melvin joined the United States Navy serving 12 months and then continued his education at Cowley College. On Aug. 2, 1951, he married Donna M. Mullett in Arkansas City, where the couple made their home. She preceded him in death in May 1990. He married Donna J. Bogner in April 1992 and she preceded him in death in September 2003. On March 12, 2005, he married Betty M. Burton and the couple has resided in Arkansas City since. Mel was a member of the Central Christian Church in Arkansas City, Hope Cemetery Association Board, the Arkansas City Historical Society and the Aircraft Owners and Pilot's Association. Melvin was a commercial pilot, owning and operating Current Aircraft at Strother Field. His life's passion was flight as he solo piloted a plane on his 16th birthday. Mel has flown as a crop duster, flight instructor and charter pilot accumulating tens of thousands of hours. There is not much of the United States Mel has not seen from a bird's-eye view. Survivors include his wife, Betty Current of the home; children, Steven and his wife, Melinda of Winfield, Priscilla Denton and her husband, Ron, of Bartlesville, Okla., and Brian Current and his wife, Cindy, of Arkansas City; stepsons, Bill Burton and his wife, Wendy, of Winfield, Kent Burton and his wife, Wanda, of Tifton, Ga.; stepdaughter, Tracy Bearden and her husband, Hillman, of Bedford, Texas; four grandchildren, eight stepgrandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and two wives. A memorial has been established with the Hope Cemetery Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
