Jo Ann (Noble) Barton, 68, of the Frazier Community, rural Agency, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000 at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.
She was born on September 29, 1932 TO J.D. and Madonna Ann (Sherwood) Noble near Dearborn. Jo Ann grew up near Frazier where she graduated from the Number Five Elementary School and in 1950 graduated valedictorian from the Gower High School. She then attended Northwest Missouri State Teacher¹s College in Maryville and graduated in 1957.
On August 12, 1956 she was united in marriage to Chester L. Barton. After their marriage they lived in the Frazier Community of rural Agency.
Jo Ann taught elementary school in Council Bluffs, IA, Gower, Edgerton and St. Joseph. In 1998, after teaching 46 years, she retired from Mid-Buchanan Elementary School in Faucett.
In 1954 Jo Ann was an International Farm youth Exchange Delegate to Scotland. She was selected as an outstanding educator in the 1975 Edition of Who¹s Who in Missouri Education. In 1989-90 she was included in Who¹s Who in American Education, and was nominated by Wendy Wood for inclusion in 1997-98. In 1996 she was a recipient of the Mercedes ³Dede² Smith Award for outstanding gifted teacher of the year.
Jo Ann was a member of the Frazier Baptist Church for over 53 years where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and served as W.M.U President. She belonged to the Number Five 4-H Club and the Number Five Extension Club, both in Frazier. She was president of the Mid-Buchanan C.T.A. for many years, the M.S.T.A. and the Stay Young Club.
Jo Ann was preceded in death by her mother; a son, David; and a daughter, Ellen. She is survived by her husband, Chester L. Barton, of the home; one daughter, Jo Lynn Huwe, Gower; one son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Donna Barton, Gower; five grandchildren, Jessica, Emily, Bethany, Kelsey and Megan; her father, J.D. Noble, Agency; one sister, Joyce King, St. Joseph; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 17 at the Frazier Baptist Church.
