Cramerton - Joan Whitaker Acker, 77, died September 25, 2011 at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
Born August 24, 1934, native of Taylor, SC, she was the daughter of the late Claude Edward & Lucy Long Whitaker.
Joan began her career in communications as editor of a front page column for The Gastonia Gazette. She then became director of public relations for the Greater Carolinas Chapter, American Red Cross in Charlotte. Three years later, she was named executive director, Gaston Chapter, American Red Cross. She coľorganized the Cramer Mountain Investment Club and was an avid bridge player. She was a member of the Charlotte Public Relations Society, a member of All Saints Episcopal Church and volunteered with meals on wheels.
Survivors include her sons and daughters in law, Greg & Rachel Clanton of Gastonia; Whit and Kimberly Bryan Clanton of Raleigh; grandchildren, Brian & Maribeth Clanton, Zane Clanton & Courtney Heavner, Michael Clanton, Stuart Bryan & Bo Bryan; great granddaughter, Ella Grace Clanton; brother & sister in law, Ray & Glenda Whitaker of Gastonia; nephews, Ray Whitaker, Jr., Bruce Whitaker & Glenn Whitaker and 2 great nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Bill Clanton, Rex Edison & Joe Acker, and her nephew, Bryan Whitaker.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00PM, Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at All Saints Episcopal Church with Reverend Linda Baker Pineo and Reverend Deacon Anita Ware officiating. Interment will follow in Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7:00-9:00 PM at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church, 1201 S. New Hope Rd., Gastonia, NC 28054.
