Gertrude Alkire, 88, passed away January 29, 2010 at 9:40 a.m. in Summerford Nursing Home, Falkville, AL.

Surviving are her three children: Suzanne (Richard) Hubanks of Commerce, Mich.; Howard of Decatur, Ala.; and Clark (Stephenie) of Maumee, Ohio. Gertrude also leaves behind six grandchildren, Kelly (Steve) Trosin of Canton, Mich.; Jason (Julie) Alkire of New York, N.Y.; Cynnamon (Chris) Gray of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; Josh (Tonya) Alkire of Perrysburg, Ohio; Janelle (Bob) Matuszak of Sylvania, Ohio; and Melissa Alkire of Toledo, Ohio, and seven great-grandchildren.

For 88 years, Gertrude embraced life with courage and fun. She was a loving sister, mother and grandmother. Gertrude and John's home in Erie was a gathering place for many, both young and old. Gertrude loved to play cards, especially penny-ante and push rummy. She enjoyed music; John would play the fiddle and guitar while Gertrude sang. Occasionally, Gertrude could even be persuaded to yodel! The grandchildren will always remember her famous Easter sponge cake, and her fried eggs ... over easy with crisp edges.

Visitation will be Tuesday, February 2 from 3 to 8 p.m. at Prochnow Funeral Home, 14567 Dixie Hwy, Monroe, MI (734)241-7070 where funeral services will be Wednesday, February 3 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery, Erie.
