Rose was born to a French immigrant father and a Kansas born mother. She was the 9th of 10 children. Rose grew up in Parsons, Kansas in a hard working family with a truck garden business. She was married to William 'Bill' Baldwin about 1932. They divorced and Rose moved to the Los Angeles, California area and raised daughter, Joanne Baldwin alone.
