Obituary - Ella Kate Cook - Baldwin
Neodesha Register Jan. 23, 1891
An Estimable Woman Gone
A feeling of sadness has pervaded our entire community on account of the death of Mrs. W.D. Baldwin, which, although she has been ill for some months past, and was not unexpected, was still a shock on account of the great esteem in which she was held by those who knew her. Mrs. Baldwin's maiden name was Ella K. Cook. She was born in Fayette county, Ohio, in 1858 and lived there until in January 1878, when Mr. Baldwin, who had previously located here, returned and was married to her and brought her to the home in this city which he had prepared for her and here she has since lived, winning the good will and esteem of all with whom she came in contact, by her gentle, courteous manner and by her devotion to the duties of her home and family until her death, January 18th, at 4 p.m.
To their home came five children, one of whom faded away in its infancy and passed to its resting place on high, last summer. After its death Mrs. Baldwin's health grew more delicate and she passed into the physicians care, but no serious results were apprehended until in November when her lungs became affected and that dread disease, consumption, of which her father and mother had died made its appearance and with increasing rapidity hurried its victim to the grave in the bloom of her early womanhood, and while four little ones, the eldest twelve years of age, were looking to her for care and guidance, and just at the period when her loving husband, assisted by her untiring labors and devotion had at length built up such a home and secured such an income as would permit them with less labor to enjoy more of the comforts of life. The sympathies of the entire community are with Mr. Baldwin in the sad affliction which has visited him and his family of orphaned children.
Mrs. Baldwin's funeral occurred from the residence on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., Rev. J. S. McClung conducting, and a large number of our citizens attending.
Mr. Baldwin's mother, Mary F. Baldwin, of Madison county, Ohio, who has been here for some weeks, will remain for a few weeks longer, to assist in the care of the afflicted household. Miss Maria Cook, of Carthage, MO., a cousin of the deceased, was present at the funeral. Mr. Baldwin desires us in connection with this article to express the fact that he is sincerely grateful for the kind sympathy and assistance of all those who aided him in this hour of trial.
